As you trek through the ghostly interiors of these Icelandic ice caves, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to another world. Volcanic Black Sand Beaches

There’s also the black beach at Solheimasandur, which is the site of a haunting plane wreck. All that remains of the 1973 crash is today aircraft’s fuselage and it is an awe-inspiring sight.

Another dark beach is the magical Diamond Beach just across the Ring Road from Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. Unfortunately, you won’t find actual diamonds here. The sparklers that people refer to are actually chunks of ice that have washed ashore from a nearby glacier. They range in size from as small as a pint of ice cream to as large as an SUV. You could also do what many of the visitors to our fair shores opt for: and Iceland road trip. That could be traveling around the Ring Road on a 7-day itinerary or taking a day trip to Snaefellsnes Peninsula. All of our international travelers arrived at Keflavik international airport, which is about 40 minutes outside of Reykjavik. You can spend some time exploring the capital city or hit the road immediately with your car, camper van or motorhome rental.

One of the top tourist routes in Iceland as the Golden Circle driving circuit. It features the wonders of Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and the geysers of Haukadalur Valley. This collection of natural highlights is part of a larger circular route with several additional stops you can make.

You might be lucky enough to be here in the summer during the time of the Midnight Sun. If so, you’ll have plenty of hours to squeeze in all of these fun extra detours along the way. Just pay attention to the time so you don’t suffer from fatigue while driving.

Further afield is the aforementioned Snaefellsnes Peninsula to the north and dark sand beaches along the South Coast. There are also some gorgeous waterfalls such as Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss en route to Vik.
