Reykjavik is the most northerly capital of the world, its name translates to the smokey bay. The capital of the land of ice and fire lies in southwestern Iceland, on the south bank of Faxa bay. Currently it is the cultural, economic and governmental center of Iceland. It is one of the cleanest, greenest and safest cities in the world. Reykjavik has much to offer and there are many attractions here for every kind of tourist. I personally prefer low cost travelling and I like to take advantage of offers and activities that are free of charge. I think we all like that, don’t we? That is why I decided to write this list of 10 Free Things To Do In Reykjavik.
Elliðár
The Elliðár Valley is right in the middle of Reykjavik. The area can be easily reached by public transport. The river passing through the vegetation and the waterfalls just add a charm to this place. There are many birds and greenery in this location so you can spend some time out in the fresh air and wonderful scenery. This is of the Free Things To Do In Reykjavik.
Grótta Lighthouse
The lighthouse in Reykjavik is another noteworthy place in the capital and another place added to our 10 Free Things To Do In Reykjavik list. It is not a difficult place to reach. The distance you will have to walk from the bus station to the lighthouse is about 1km. If you are lucky during the winter months, this would be the perfect place to observe the Northern Lights. There is nothing more romantic.
Kolaportið Market
This is a well know flea market in Reykjavik and it had to appear in our Free Things To Do In Reykjavik list. This is a great place for people who like to check and buy antiques and handcrafts. Even you have no plan to shop a thing, it is worth to come and have a look.
Tjörnin Lake
Lake Tjörnin is right in the center of Reykjavik. You can come here with your friends and family and have a walk along the lane. This is a very good way to start your tour around the capital. Many Icelanders come to spend some free time here during their time off so you will find many happy faces here.
Esja Mountain
This mountain is located 914 m above the sea level around 20 kilometers from Reykjavik. I must mention though that it is quite difficult to reach so it would better practice a bit before heading to the peak. The bus number 57 will take you to the Hiking Center from where you can walk up to the top.
Perlan
Perlan is the glazed building which raises on a hill Öskjuhlíð. There is a restaurant and a bar on the last floor from which you can admire the amazing views of Reykajvik.
Laugarvegur
This is one of its kind main shopping street in Reykjavik. Here you can find two main shopping malls Kringlan and Smaralind. This is a great place to get your souvenirs (these ones are obviously not for free!)
10 Free Things To Do In Reykjavik
Hallgrímskirkja Church
This church is beautifully sculpted in concrete and completed in 1986. You can take a lift to the top on a high of 73 meters. It is the third largest building in Iceland.
The Old Harbor
This one of Free Things To Do In Reykjavik is another spot on our list. It is separated from the shopping port. The Old Harbor is a starting point for a trip or cruise and whale watching tours. It is also a great spot for photography lovers where old fishing boats make a nice background.
Old Town
Austurvollur is the name given to the square in the Old Town of Reykjavik. Here you should definitely see Domkirkja church, Parliament building and elegant Hotel Borg in art deco style. You can spend some nice time here walking around admiring the beauty of the capital.
